It's just two more days of working at the University of Nottingham, and I am wrapping up projects.
It's all been rather bitter-sweet. Sad to be leaving some exciting projects — I'm the lead developer on one project, on another I would have been pulled in as a senior software engineer based on the experience of another project, another project has been delivered and is expecting funding, and another I have helped write the grant proposal for — but with the current strike action over how the university pension scheme is being hollowed out, and of course, the push to return to the office by higher-ups outside of the department, has meant that I have sought and found a new position that is fully remote, pays better and has longevity rather than fixed-term contract.
My position at the university has perhaps taught me more in the last two years compared to grinding through postdoc position after postdoc position. I've learnt python, got started in cloud computing, HPC based machine learning, and perhaps more importantly team leadership and more teaching experience.
CYBR Mentioned on BB Culture
CYBR got quite a bit of coverage in a new article on BBC Culture, where my interview with Mike Pondsmith is cited, plus the most recent issue where myself and editor James Joseph looked at technologies to fight climate change. It's quite something to be cited along with quotes from Neal Stephenson, and in the context of cyberpunk as a genre and the new Matrix film.
Darker Days Radio and Darkhammer
We've put out some fun episodes recently, and informative ones. Most importantly in the last issue of Darkhammer, with guests Crystal Mazur and Fiona Howat, we discussed the first impressions and barriers — perceived or real — to entering the Warhammer wargames, plus the issues of diversity and representation within the game settings themselves.
The episode before, along with guest host Rob Arcangeli, we discussed Bretonnia and how this area of the Old World is excellent roleplay potential as a place for characters to visit or come from.
Hobby
Hoping to get some more Blood Raven Space Marines painted over Xmas, and to finish my Epic armies. Of course I did finish painting the new War Cry terrain from Red Harvest.
