Into the New Year

Writer's picture: Chris HandleyChris Handley

Heading into the new year I can reflect on the year that has gone, and while I have achieved a few things, it's also been tougher than I was expecting it to be. For one I didn't start the year out thinking I would be looking for a new job halfway through the year. Nor did I expect to have a massive falling out with my immediate family due to their unreasonable, and outright vile attacks against my partner due to things out of her control - chronic illness seems to count for nothing. When that sort of thing happens you realize who actually care, be it friends or my wife's family. And with relation to that I have been grateful that my new job pays well, has good healthcare coverage, and that I have an understanding line manager.

Work

Work has been going well, as I am growing in confidence in my new role, and my line manager is pleased with how I am doing even if only 6 months into the position. My knowledge of AWS in action is improving and I feel happy to voice my opinions on approaches that we should be taking. The new year should see me doing some more learning, mainly Typescript and AWS ML implementations, while also looking at how I can meet the targets for promotion.

Hobby

While I am trundling along getting my Warmachine armies painted, I am also painting my Legions Imperialis Space Marines army. I already had models from Adeptus Titanicus and Aeronautica Imperialis, meaning the addition of tiny tanks and marines. It means I have a 3000pt army already, and so I am mainly painting tiny marines and tanks. It does take me all the way back to how I got started in the hobby, as my first minis were for Epic Space Marine 2e. Concerning games played, with the holidays the Necromunda campaign has slowed down, but I have gotten in a game of Warcry as the players at the local club want to start up a campaign, and it seems I know Warcry the best (plus have too much terrain and many warbands and beasties).

Freelance Work

Perhaps the most significant releases or announcements I have worked on, are the Ulfenkarn book for Cubicle 7's Age of Sigmar Soulbound. It was fun to do proof reading for this eagerly awaiting book - and as a owner of Cursed City I can't wait to run some games using the minis and tiles in conjunction with the rpg.

The other game I have written for is coming to Kickstarter in the new year - Eldritch Automata. This game is a horror-mecha rpg, drawing inspiration from Evangelion, Gundam, Escaflowne and more, and I can't wait to talk more about it.

Looking Forward

The new job, plus finishing the house renovations, has been exhausting, especially when you add on top family drama. So the next year the plan is to do what I like for myself and my partner, without stressing about pleasing everyone. Part of that will be attending conventions like Chillcon, UKGE, and perhaps Tabletop Scotland. It will also mean picking up writing work that I want to do, and that I get proper compensation for. I know I am almost at the point of creating my own game or similar product, and that means no longer doing certain work for free, or for low pay. With less house renovation being done, and the house being tidy, it should mean a lot more time for hobbies, and for getting regular roleplay sessions started again. So health, balance, and doing what is fun and worthwhile, and not just doing it all for the side hustle.
