Leading the Narrative

This is likely my last post of the year, and looking back at the year that has gone by, in some respects it has been one of the most productive, while not being exhausting.

Partially this has been thanks to my job. This time last year I was only just 6 months into my current role, and still feeling a little out of my depth. However, as the year has gone on, I've been assured that my progress, contributions, and attitude to my work and the team have been a valuable addition as I have push new methods being adopted, taught graduate programmers, and developed my own understanding of the fintech sector. Just this last week, I felt quite accomplished in my learning, as I was more than able to teach and demonstrate to a graduate programmer how MongoDB queries worked, and the syntax to build what we needed to extend the code I had already written a few months back. Overall I think this year I hit a good number of my goals for the year in the team, in particular further demonstrating my team leading ability and general leadership skills such as running scrum meetings.

Now that the application is out to customers, I hope that some of the machine learning based goals I wanted to undertake will have time this coming year. Plus I still want to do some more type script so I can become a better front end developer.

While the last few months have been quite with respect to games writing, that has mostly been a symptom of projects that I will be working on simply moving resources into position. That isn't a bad thing as it has been a bit of holiday from month on month games writing, allowing me to paint and wargame more, which is just the sort of research I need to be doing ahead of developing the Eldritch Automata wargame.

Speaking of which, Eldritch Automata, along with my work for Cubicle 7 this year have marked it as perhaps one of the most important years for my writing career thus far. Being involved in Eldritch Automata, and contributing to more Wrath and Glory book (including one that won a gold Ennie award), and the forth coming Strangelight Workshop for Iron Kingdoms, have all been exciting and rewarding, and have allowed me to further contribute to IPs I care for. Iron Kingdoms in particular has only strengthened its position as I have dived deeper into Warmachine, for which this year I have painted 3 armies - Khador, Cygnar, and this last month, Cryx.

Cryx has been a favourite faction of mine since the first edition of Warmachine, but I never collected them. So the new edition was a great excuse, and the new models really demonstrate the weird horror of the army, and allow for some fun glow effects.

One of the things I really want to get into is running a narrative campaign of Warmachine, using lots of exciting terrain to create the battlefields of Western Immoren. Warmachine has a reputation for being a tournament game using 2d terrain, to allow for precision movement. However, the new edition has less gotchas in it, and I am more keen than ever to make/buy terrain for the game, and explore the setting through the game.

In addition to playing games of the new edition of Warmachine, I've been running a campaign of Necromunda at the local club, which again, proves to be a different game experience as I arrange games between opponents, adjudicate on games, while also taking part with my own gang of Enforcers. It's be a good laugh thus far but there are still a good few months ahead for us as we play the Law and Misrule campaign.

Of course the big thing on the horizon is the Trashumansim rpg, for which planning meetings are taking place and there should be some news in the near future, but in the mean time I did get from Le Destroy a hard copy of the graphic novel. It also came with stickers, and a copy of the album - on cassette (guess I am buying cassette player sometime soon).

So the year ahead is going to be a busy one. An rog to write, a wargame to design, a few other projects to announce, and events like Chillcon, UKGE and more to attend and run demos at. I've learnt plenty this year, in particular with regard to publishing and video editing, and those skills are going to be critical for producing and promoting the projects I am involved in. It's going to be an interesting, and likely challenging year, but one I am looking forward to.

So that is all for now before I can say anything else about my work. Games I will be playing in the coming year; Necromunda

Warmachine

Trench Crusade

Legions Imperialis

Warcry

Kult
