Months seem to fly by, and this month has been packed with things. My car got repaired, and for a couple of weeks, I had the joy of driving an Audi as a courtesy car - fun, but also not a premium as they like you to think, compared to my Skoda. And the weather in Sheffield has been wet, warm, cold, and autumnal - I don't think we will get a proper Summer this year.
Furthermore, it's pretty strange to have the Tories out. So I went to uni in 2001 and graduated in 2009, right around the financial crash and then the subsequent Tory election victory. So, I feel my entire professional career has been dominated by the effects of that crash, Tory austerity, and the ramping up of culture wars to enable the Tories to divide and rule. To have those bastards gone feels like a weight has been lifted and adults have entered the room. I don't think Labour are perfect by any means, but it seems like a start to a more progressive country.
Work
The project rumbles on, and bugs and defects are dealt with while new features are added. It's still fun, and I feel like I have some say in the direction of work and mentoring others. I am looking into cyber security, as I hope to get on a course at work where AI and Gen AI are applied to cyber security. That would be a great way to use my background in machine learning, Python, and mathematics.
Hobby
This month has been a bit thinner on the wargames front as I have been mainly running Age of Sigmar Soulbound - which has been a lot of fun as we completed the first adventure, which involved some exciting pirates shenanigans - but I did paint up the Rotmire Creed finally. I have put together a new Stormcast Eternal army, as my current army will be defunct next Summer. Age of Sigmar 4e seems like a good set of rules, and I quite like how everything is now an ability. That means every rule is discretely described and can be reapplied in a manner that means there is a lot more consistency with the powers and abilities of fighters. The other thing I am picking up tomorrow the new Necromunda boxed game. I'm also looking forward to having even more Van Saar, Spyrer Hunters, and new freaking Genestealers.
Freelance Work
Eldritch Automata finished it's funding campaign, reading $130k, which is an increadible amount, and also means as part of one of the stretch goals, I will be writing the wargame. I've already been collating together ideas for the system, and I am excited for the future development of it.
And as the above campaign ends a new one begins.
The Strangelight Workshop is another Iron Kingdoms RPG product I contributed to. In this game, the players are members of the Strangelight Workshop who engage in ghost hunting in the Iron Kingdoms. This book is standalone, so while it still needs the DnD 5e core books, it doesn't require the previous IKRPG books. I'm excited to play the final product, as the game introduces systems to make DnD more appropriate for investigative horror scenarios.
Some other exciting projects are on the horizon, but it is too soon to talk about them. However, I will be at Peachcon in Derby, running demos of Wrath and Glory and Age of Sigmar Soulbound at the gaming convention that Chris Peach has set up for Patreon backers.
