Things in Transition

It's been a while since my last post, and that has been because work has been busy, freelance work has been quiet as things ramp up ready to start work, and also the last few months have been tough looking after my cat Yamato, who sadly we had to put to sleep to stop his suffering as cancer had taken hold dramatically.

I'll miss that silly cat.

Work

Work is as busy as always, and I've had a bit of fun testing out some new ideas ready for a more extensive refactoring of the lambda functions, while also teaching the junior developers some AWS fundamentals. But as always work is fulfilling and also not causing me stress in the ways that academia did. I've got a few training programs I want to do soon, mainly around AI but for cyber security, while also volunteering for National Numeracy, which will involve explaining to primary school kids the importance of maths to my career path and interests. I'm really looking forward to doing this sort of outreach, and I plan on the first event being at my nephew's school.

Hobby

These last two months have mainly been about working through the hobby backlog (while increasing it, too!). Given the way that GW have made my entire Stormcast army defunct I finally got around to painting brand new Stormcast that I got through the magazine, making a rather nice little 1000pt army, plus with units that are warbands in Warcry. It was fun to paint, especially so because the newer Stormcast proportions are really dynamic.

Meanwhile the other project has been Necromunda: Hive Secundus. This was a really exciting new core game for 3 reasons - Van Saar models (as I have lots as I love that gang), the return of Spyrers, and also the new Malstrain Genestealers. So far I've painted the new Van Saar Tech Hunters, the Spyrer Orrus, and the Spyrers that came out a week later.

I'm really looking forward to using the Spyrers in a new campaign, as they would thematically be a fun way to have player gangs that are doing so well put under pressure. I've also played a few practice games and faced Delaque for the first time, and they are some tricksy bastards with all their web weapons and other movement tricks. Other than the above I am awaiting some new arrivals for Warmachine to complete my two current armies and to start a new Cryx army.

Freelance Work

As I said, freelance work has paused while projects ramp up, but that is good. Having a rest from writing and podcasting has allowed me time to catch up on hobby projects or do renovations at home. But I did have a lot of fun at Peachcon, running demos of Wrath and Glory and Age of Sigmar Soulbound, plus a demo game of Warmachine. It was a really good convention with a lot of games on display, plus a diverse painting competition, for which I came 3rd in the single miniatures category with my Kingdom Death Black Knight.

So this coming month of fun should involve more Warmachine, more Necromunda, some more prep work for games I am working on, and finishing off some more home decorating.

EDIT! Ah fuck, I totally forgot to say that work I had done over a year ago for Helmgast for their upcoming Kult kickstarter is now announced.
